With the Start&Stop system, the Fiat 500 e-car can automatically turn off its engine whenever the car is on a complete stop. The ideal set up for this is situation is during heavy traffic conditions. Aside from allowing the car to be more fuel efficient, this Start&Stop system also limits the CO2 emission of the e-car.

The manufacturers also thought about safety precautions when they added this feature to their Fiat500. The Start&Stop system can be turned on or off by the driver with a simple push of the button. In any event that the driver chooses to control the car’s ignition manually, s/he may easily do so.

Several control strategies and sensors have been installed in the car to allow for a smooth flowing drive. With the Star&Stop system turned on, the e-car’s engine will only come to a complete stop when the 6mph speed range has been reached after pulling away.

The driver needs to step on the clutch pedal first before the engine can be restarted. To protect the car’s heating system, the Start&Stop system’s operation has been disabled while the engine is still cold.

It also won’t work when the battery is on a low charge, when the heated rear window is active, when the front wiper is set to maximum speed, and when the car is on park maneuver.

Also, when the car has been put to a complete stop for more than three minutes while on Start&Stop mode, it can only be restarted by turning the ignition key manually. Manual ignition is also needed when the driver’s seatbelt is unfastened and/or a car door has been opened.
